For quick texts, they are fine. The costs are hidden in the output: no filler-word removal, thin punctuation, no formatting, and accuracy that drops with accents, jargon, or background noise. You save typing and spend it editing.

Paid tools exist because of that editing gap, not the recognition. The question to ask is how much text you produce. A few messages a day, free is plenty. Real writing volume, and cleanup time becomes the actual price.
